The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Tenpin Bowling

Tenpin Bowling is one of many bowling games that are thought to have been played since ancient times. And no wonder, because it’s a lot of fun. Each game of ten pin bowling is divided into ten frames. In each frame, players take turns to try and knock down as many pins as they can. Within a frame each player has two attempts unless they knock all the pins down first try and score a strike. So, if you have any unanswered bowling questions read the bowling guide below for the answers to bowling etiquette and the bowling scoring system.

Bowling Equipment

All you need for tenpin bowling is a bowling ball and some bowling shoes. These shoes allow you to slide more which is good for bowling. Also, not wearing the correct footwear could damage the floor. Luckily, both of these things can be rented from your local bowling alley. Those a little more serious about tenpin bowling will want to buy their own bowling equipment such as bowling shoes, shirts, bags and of course bowling balls. Some also wear wrist supports or buy gloves to help prevent calluses, blisters or sprains.

Health and Safety

- The floors of bowling alleys are highly polished so this makes them very slippery, this combined with a 16lb ball can be very hazardous unless you are not aware of your surroundings. This is why it is also important to not eat or drink on the run up area. The smallest drop of liquid could cause a disaster!

- Be aware of others around you!

- Always lift your bowling ball up with two hands so you do not strain yourself.

- Make sure the sole of your sliding shoe is not dirty, this could make your foot stick to the floor when you are bowling. Again, very dangerous when you remember what you are holding and the people behind you.

Basic Bowling Etiquette

- Never use somebody else’s ball. This is the 1st rule in bowling etiquette. Use the same ball throughout the game. If you change balls, return the other one to the rack.

- Keep your area tidy and clean, put trash in the bin and do not eat or drink on the approach.

- Bowling etiquette also means dressing appropriately in clean clothes, ladies ensure your skirt is long enough to cover your modesty.

- Respect the rules of bowling etiquette, the bowling alley, its equipment and the other bowlers and be sportsmanlike!

Bowling Scoring

- Players receive a point for every pin they knock over completely.

- If the ball rolls down the gutter you score zero points.

- If on your first go you knock over 6 pins and 2 pins on your second try, you score 8 points.

- If you knock down all the pins, you score a strike. Your score for this strike depends on what you score in the next frame. For example, if you score 7 in the frame after your strike, your score for the strike will be 17. 10 (for the strike) + 7 (next frame score) = 17.

- The above scoring also applied when you score a spare (knocking down all the pins in 2 attempts).
